Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Wikipedia Zero?

It is a Wikimedia Foundation initiative involving partnerships with mobile operators that waive data access charges for Wikipedia access. Learn more about Wikipedia Zero here.

What does the setting "Warn if leaving Wikipedia Zero" mean?

If your operator supports Wikipedia Zero for the Wikipedia app:

  • Leaving the checkbox for this setting checked means that if you tap on a link for an external site from within the Wikipedia app while on your mobile operator's network, you will be prompted before continuing to the external site. This is to help you avoid unintended data access charges.
  • Unchecking the checkbox for this setting means that even if your are on your mobile operator's network and your mobile operator zero-rates Wikipedia, you won't receive any notification when you tap on a link for an external site from within the Wikipedia app. You will instead be taken directly to the external site with your mobile device's web browser.

Does my mobile operator support Wikipedia Zero for the Wikipedia app?

It depends. The new version of the Wikipedia app being introduced in 2014 provides a visual indicator if your operator supports Wikipedia Zero for the app.

Is Wikipedia Zero supported on the old version of the app?

Your operator may support Wikipedia Zero when you use the old version of the app, but there will not be any clear indicator in the old version of the Wikipedia app even if this is the case.

If the new version of the app is not indicating that my operator supports Wikipedia Zero in the app, am I being charged?

In this case, standard data usage terms with your operator may apply. Please note that Wikipedia content does not itself require payment, as it is licensed as free content.
