Job summary

The Fundraiser Production Coordinators will work as a year-round, permanent team to support the annual Wikimedia Foundation and Chapters fundraiser. You will implement the banners and landing pages that drive the fundraiser in more than 100 languages and countries. In the off-season you will help develop tech and human systems to improve the upcoming fundraiser and you will occasionally perform other non-fundraising tasks for the Foundation, Wikimedia Chapters and Wikimedia community.

The Wikimedia fundraiser is based on constant testing and optimization of different themes, messages, and images. You will be the person implementing these tests for production, recording each test in shared reporting documents and reporting out results. You will engage volunteers to translate hundreds of banners and landing pages over the course of the fundraiser, and carefully localize pages for as many countries and languages as possible.

You will also work collaboratively with chapters and groups of Wikimedians all around the world — answering questions, solving problems, and listening closely to input given. You will proactively reach out to key stakeholders to be sure they're aware of the testing that's being done and aggressively searching for high-value ideas that haven't been implemented or tested. You will step into difficult discussions to explain details and context to staff and contributors to promote mutual understanding and healthy communication.

Responsibilities

  • Implement new tests of fundraising banners and donation pages several times per day during the annual fundraiser, carefully logging each test on public wikis.
  • During the rest of the year, implement weekly tests; train new production coordinators; work with tech staff and community members to develop new systems for the upcoming fundraiser.
  • Use wiki markup, MediaWiki templates and HTML to create and modify donation pages.
  • Use wiki markup, HTML and Javascript to create banners using Wikimedia's CentralNotice system.
  • Use graphic design software to make minor modifications to images used in the banners (scaling, alignment, etc.).
  • Answer questions about the fundraiser production from community members, or connect them with appropriate staff at the Foundation.
  • Train volunteers and Wikimedia Chapter staff so that they can reach self-sufficiency in some of the above tasks.
  • Support some non-fundraising needs such as outreach and notification of Foundation activities to Wikimedia communities.
  • Keep up with the developments in the Wikimedia movement, using multiple communications channels (IRC, e-mail, mailing lists, chat).
  • Help to maintain the database of fundraising volunteers.
  • Increase the number of actively involved community members.
  • Communicate with key stakeholders in a precise, detail-oriented manner.
  • Other duties as required.

Required qualifications

  • Experienced Wikimedian with established contacts within the community.
  • Experience and skill working with MediaWiki markup, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with other languages a plus (such as PHP, SQL, or Python).
  • A willingness to be open to and learn new techniques and strategies (both technical and social) to increase quality and efficiency of work.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are a must.
  • Intellectually curious, particularly with regard to organizations, social movements and large-scale and distributed collaboration problems.
  • Ability to work in an open, transparent and collaborative environment.
  • Ability to adapt quickly and easily to changing requirements in a fast-paced, tech based non-profit organization.
  • Ability to adhere to deadlines and perform high quality work under general supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an integrated team, as well as to perform well on individual tasks.
  • All positions in the Community Department involve collaborating and communicating with Wikimedia project contributors and users intensively and publicly, grappling with many difficult-to-solve problems, navigating technological and social challenges and opportunities, and dealing with a high level of complexity and uncertainty.
  • Candidates should have extremely high levels of skill and comfort in communication (especially writing), qualitative and quantitative analysis, management and self-management.
  • Candidates must have a strong record of contributing to Wikimedia projects.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalency required.

Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects are authored and edited entirely by communities of volunteer contributors. The Wikimedia Foundation maintains the technical infrastructure to support these communities and pursues a permanent agenda of technical and programmatic innovation. About the Wikimedia annual fundraiser

Most of the revenue of the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Chapters is earned in an annual fundraiser led by volunteers and Foundation and Chapter staff. The fundraiser is a time when users and contributors to Wikimedia projects are asked to pitch in to keep our projects free — as in free to use and free of advertising. Our financial needs are communicated to users through banners at the top of projects, and appeal letters read by those who click on the banners. Only a tiny portion of users donate — therefore, we must always be improving our methods. We also seek to make the fundraiser as short and low-impact as possible on the sites. For the people working on the fundraiser, it is a fast-paced, extremely demanding project.
