About me

I am a PhD candidate in Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington where I perform research in the fields of HCI, CSCW, UCD and other fun acronyms. My dissertation research involves studying WikiProjects as complex systems and developing tools to support WikiProject-based collaboration. Previous academic research has focused on gatekeeping practices on Wikipedia and on the Wikipedia policy environment. I have also worked on several other open-source communication & collaboration tools, like this one and this one.

I have an MS from UW, and a BA in philosophy from St. John's College. I am a voracious and omnivorous reader, and a passionately amateurish musician. In my (ever-diminishing) spare time, I also enjoy trail running, kayaking and a good game of racquetball.

My work

I started at the Foundation during the 2011 Summer of Research. During my summer fellowship I worked on research sprints focused on new editor participation patterns(1,2), and WikiProjects. I currently do design, development and user research work on the WP:Teahouse, a new user help and socialization space on the English Wikipedia. I also advise and support current Community Fellowship projects around improving dispute resolution and user help documents.
