D. Victoria Baranetsky
About me
Victoria joined the Wikimedia Foundation in April 2015 as Legal Counsel. Prior to working at Wikimedia, Victoria worked at The New York Times Company as the First Amendment Fellow where she managed the Times' litigations including, libel, subpoena, and FOIA work. She also did prepublication review and advised reporters on other matters.
Outside of Wikimedia Foundation, Victoria has served as pro bono counsel for Freedom of the Press Foundation. She also is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. Previously, Victoria clerked for J. Rosemary Pooler, United States Circuit Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and was a Harvard University Sheldon Knox fellow.
In a prior life, Victoria was a journalist having graduated from Columbia Journalism School. She sometimes still enjoys interviewing strangers for the fun of it. Victoria graduated from Harvard Law School in 2011 and received a degree from Oxford University in Political Theory where she wrote about the changing values in the First Amendment.
My work
My role is to serve as a Legal Counsel with a focus on First Amendment issues. In particular, I will be helping with Wikimedia's trademark, copyright, public policy, and human resources issues, in addition to a wide array of other matters.
