Local chapters

Local chapters are self-dependent organizations that share the goals of the Wikimedia Foundation and support them within a specified geographical region. They support the Wikimedia Foundation, the Wikimedia community and the Wikimedia projects in different ways - by collecting donations, organizing local events and projects and spreading the word of Wikimedia and Free Culture. They also provide the volunteer community and potential partners and supporters with a point of contact capable of fulfilling specific local needs.

The Wikimedia projects have an international scope, and the Wikimedia movement has already made a significant impact throughout the world. To continue this success on an organizational level, Wikimedia is building an international network of associated organizations. There are currently Template:CHAPTER-COUNT Wikimedia chapters.

Argentina: Wikimedia Argentina

Wikimedia Argentina, founded on 1 September 2007 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the Argentine Wikimedia chapter and a non-profit association run upon the Civil Code of Argentina.

Australia: Wikimedia Australia

Wikimedia Australia is a non-profit incorporated body incorporated in the state of Victoria in August 2008. It was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation on 1 March 2008.

Austria: Wikimedia Österreich

Wikimedia Österreich was founded in February 2008.

Bangladesh: Wikimedia Bangladesh

Wikimedia Bangladesh (WMBD) is the Bangladeshi Wikimedia chapter. It is a voluntary and non-profit organization founded in Dhaka as the Wikimedia Bangladesh Foundation and its memorandum of understanding was formally approved by the Wikimedia Foundation on 3 October 2011. Its official registration in Bangladesh is pending for a later public opening.

Canada: Wikimedia Canada

Wiki Canada, (d/b/a Wikimedia Canada in English and Wikimédia Canada in French), is the Canadian Wikimedia chapter. It was incorporated in November 2010 and formally recognized by the Foundation in May 2011.

Chile: Wikimedia Chile

Wikimedia Chile is a non-profit corporation according to the Chilean law, formally recognized as a Wikimedia chapter by the Foundation in June 2011. It was founded on July 16th, 2011.

Czech Republic: Wikimedia Česká republika

Wikimedia Česká republika was founded in March 2008.

Denmark: Wikimedia Danmark

Wikimedia Danmark is the Danish Wikimedia chapter. It was formed on 14 March 2009, and approved on 3 July 2009.

Estonia: Wikimedia Eesti

Mittetulundusühing Wikimedia Eesti was founded on 25 July 2010 in Tallinn, Estonia. It was recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation on 31 August 2010 and was officially registered on 6 October 2010.

Finland: Wikimedia Suomi

Wikimedia Suomi (Wikimedia Finland) was founded in June 2009.

France: Wikimédia France

Wikimédia France, founded on 23 October 2004, in Paris, is a non-profit association run upon the French law of July 1901.

Germany: Wikimedia Deutschland

Wikimedia Deutschland – Gesellschaft zur Förderung Freien Wissens e.V. (Wikimedia Germany - society for the promotion of free knowledge) was founded on 13 June 2004 in Berlin as Wikimedia's first local chapter. At the end of 2006 the membership association counted more than 300 members. Among other activities Wikimedia Deutschland initiated several important partnerships, for example with Directmedia Publishing, the publisher of the German Wikipedia-DVD, and the Deutsche Bibliothek (German national library). Donations to Wikimedia Deutschland are tax-deductible in Germany.

Hong Kong: 香港維基媒體協會

Wikimedia Hong Kong Limited (Traditional Chinese: 香港維基媒體協會有限公司) is the local chapter of Wikimedia in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It was founded on 14 July 2007 in Hong Kong, and was officially registered on 18 September 2007. It was recognized by the Foundation on 1 March 2008.

Hungary: Wikimédia Magyarország

Wikimédia Magyarország Egyesület was founded in September 2008, and it was officially registered and recognized by the Foundation in November 2008 with the aim of pursuing the mission of the Wikimedia Foundation as an association of public benefit.

India: Wikimedia India

Wikimedia India is Wikimedia's Indian chapter. It was formally approved by the Foundation in June 2010 and was registered as a society on 3 January 2011. The chapter is constituted by its Executive Committee and allows membership to anyone interested in joining.

Indonesia: Wikimedia Indonesia

Wikimedia Indonesia is a non-profit association incorporated on 5 September 2008 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and approved as Wikimedia chapter on 7 October 2008.

Israel: Wikimedia Israel

Wikimedia Israel (Hebrew: ויקימדיה-ישראל, Arabic: ويكيمديا إسرائيل) is the Israeli Wikimedia chapter. It was officially registered on 26 June 2007, after an organizing process that began on 15 December 2006, when the idea was brought before the local Wikimedian community in one of its conferences.

Italy: Wikimedia Italia

Wikimedia Italia - Associazione per la diffusione della conoscenza libera is the Italian Wikimedia chapter, formed on 17 June 2005, in Canino.

Macau: Wikimedia Macau

Wikimedia Macau was founded in April, 2011.

Macedonia: Викимедија Македонија

"Викимедија Македонија" (Wikimedia Macedonia) is a Citizens' Association run upon the law for the citizen associations and foundations, founded on 13 March 2009 in Skopje, Macedonia. It was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation on 21 September 2009.

Mexico: Wikimedia México

Wikimedia México is the Mexican Wikimedia chapter. It was approved on August 3, 2011 by the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, and pending its founding as a civil association in Mexico.

Netherlands: Wikimedia Nederland

Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland is the Dutch Wikimedia chapter. It was founded on 27 March 2006 in Eindhoven.

Norway: Wikimedia Norge/Noreg/Norga

Wikimedia Norge (Bokmål; Nynorsk Wikimedia Noreg, Northern Sami Wikimedia Norga) is the Norwegian Wikimedia chapter. It was founded on 23 June 2007, and registered in September 2008.

Philippines: Wikimedia Philippines

Wikimedia Philippines (WMPH) is the Philippine Wikimedia chapter, a non-stock, non-profit corporation duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Republic of the Philippines. The product of nearly four years of intense discussion among many members of the Philippine Wikimedia community, WMPH was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation on March 17, 2010, and officially incorporated on April 12, 2010.

Poland: Wikimedia Polska

Stowarzyszenie Wikimedia Polska (Wikimedia Polska Association) is the Polish Wikimedia chapter. It was formed on 14 August 2005, and registered three months later, on 15 November.

Portugal: Wikimedia Portugal

Associação Wikimedia Portugal (WMP) is the Portuguese Wikimedia chapter. It was approved by the WMF on 4 July 2009, and was registered as an official organization under Portuguese law on September 21, 2009.

Russia: Викимедиа РУ

Викимедиа РУ (Wikimedia RU) is the Russian Wikimedia chapter. It was approved in May 2008 and officially registered as an organization (in the form of "non-commercial partnership") under RF law in November 2008.

Serbia: Wikimedia Србије

Wikimedia Србије is the Serbian Wikimedia chapter. It was formed on 3 December 2005, and it was registered almost two months later.

South Africa: Wikimedia South Africa

Wikimedia South Africa is the South African Wikimedia chapter. It was approved on March 26, 2011, but has yet to be recognized by the foundation.

Spain: Wikimedia España

Wikimedia España is the Spanish Wikimedia chapter and a non-profit association run under the laws of Spain. It was founded and recognized by the Foundation in February 2011 after a long process of more than four years.

Sweden: Wikimedia Sverige

Wikimedia Sverige is the Swedish Wikimedia chapter. It was formed on 20 October 2007, and approved on 11 December 2007.

Switzerland: Wikimedia CH

Wikimedia CH - Verein zur Förderung Freien Wissens is the Swiss Wikimedia chapter. It was established in Olten on 14 May 2006.

Taiwan: 中華民國維基媒體協會

Wikimedia Taiwan (Chinese: 中華民國維基媒體協會) is the Taiwanese Wikimedia chapter. It was officially registered on 11 February 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan, after an organization process that began in 19 February 2006. It was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation as a Wikimedia Chapter on 4 July 2007.

Ukraine: Вікімедіа Україна

Wikimedia Ukraine Community Association (Ukrainian: громадська організація «Вікімедіа Україна») was founded on the First Annual Meeting on May 31, 2009. On July 3, 2009 organization was approved by the Wikimedia Foundation as the Ukrainian chapter. On July 13, 2009 Wikimedia Ukraine was registered by Ministry of Justice.

United Kingdom: Wikimedia UK

Wikimedia UK is the Wikimedia chapter covering the United Kingdom - including both Great Britain, Northern Ireland, and the various overseas territories. It is a Registered Charity in the United Kingdom, and is registered as Wikimedia UK. It was founded in November 2008, formally recognised by the Foundation in January 2009, and became a Charity in November 2011.

United States, District of Columbia: Wikimedia District of Columbia

Wikimedia District of Columbia is a Wikimedia regional chapter in the United States, recognized by the Foundation on 12 September 2011. The Wiki Society of Washington, DC Inc. was incorporated in the District of Columbia as a non-profit educational organization on 7 May 2011, and serves the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia as well as the area of Washington in the Federal District of Columbia.

United States, New York City: Wikimedia New York City

Wikimedia New York City is a Wikimedia regional chapter in the United States, recognized by the Foundation on 12 January 2009. It was incorporated as a non-profit on 7 July 2009, and serves the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Join our mailing list for local meetings and events.

Venezuela: Wikimedia Venezuela

Wikimedia Venezuela is the Venezuelan Wikimedia chapter. It was approved on October 28, 2011, but has yet to be founded.
